Operations and Supply Management - The Core
Errata and ideas for changes.
p. 18, 1st paragraph of SUMMARY, line 4, change "priories" to "priorities".
p. 38, Item #5, change "$10 per day for eight days" to "$10 for up to eight days". This corresponds to Exhibit 2.10.
p. 47, problem 11. Include activity "C" as an immediate predecessor to activity G.
p. 30 and p. 41 In the definition of "the" critical path, should point out that there may be multiple "paths" through the network that have the same length.
p. 48, In the activity table make Software S2 and Hardware S3. This corresponds to the way the data file is setup. Alternatively, just change the data file and solution to correspond to the way the problem is given in the book.
p. 54, In the description change this to a 90 bed hospital to correspond to the case. Either that or change the case to an 89 bed hospital!
p. 75, problem 10. Reword this problem to make it clearer. The problem is that it might not be obvious that the term "injection molding machine" refers to making the plastic sprinklers.
p. 82, 2nd line of the paragraph on "Continuous process". Change "stops" to "steps".
p. 84, Break-even analysis. Simplify this a bit to look at BEP for a single alternative.
p. 86, 7 lines from the bottom of the page, the word “thorough” needs to be “through.”
p. 87, Exhibit 4.3C. Someway this diagram should be redone to reflect a better "flow". The "exit" to the assembly area should be changed. One idea is to just have a "materials" area and have both the input and the output going there.
p. 121 Exhibit 5.11 The formula for Pw in Model 3 says S "sub-mu" in the parentheses, and should be S times mu. In other words, the "mu" should be large case, not a subscript.
p. 131, problem 6. Change "customer waiting time" to "customer time" in part a. In part b, change "effect on system waiting time" to "effect on customer time in the system".
p. 144 2nd line of paragraph that begins "ISO 9000 currently...", on 2nd line the second "ISO 9001:2000" should be "ISO 9000:2000".
p. 144 last line last word, change "manufacturing" to "many industries".
p. 145 change the last sentence in the Six-Sigma paragraph from "... which is true if the process is only running somewhere within one sigma of the ..." to "... which is true if we assume that our process is only running somewhere within 1.5 sigma of the ..."
p. 155 Exhibit 6.9 colors don't match the text under it. "Notice that there is a probability (the red areas) of producing defective parts." should be "yellow" not red.
p. 157 Example 6.2, need to reword "A sample is taken from production and it..." to clearly show that this is different from the type of sample that would be taken when working with a X-bar chart. This sample should represent the current process mean for it to be used to evaluate the Cpk. One suggestion is to use X-double-bar in Cpk calculations to clearly make the distinction between these "samples".
p. 179 Change "Evans, Jame R." to "Evans, James R."
p. 214 Exhibit 8.5, change the Thousand Oaks shipping volume from 45 to 450.
p. 251 In the last paragraph of the opening vignette change "focused forecasting" to "collaborative forecasting".
p. 278 Problem 7, Part b. should be: "Start... with jan, Feb, March" not Jan March April.
p. 367 Problem 1, need to "indent" the BOM list.
p. 359 Projected available balance - consider changing this to projected ending balance. Now sure what instructors prefer with this.
p. 370 Problem 14 The item changes from item X to item A. It would be better to have an actual example of an item name instead of a variable letter.
Instructor's Solution Manual
Chapter 3, Revise the Shouldice Hospital teaching note. The 52 patients per day mentions assumes that they hire another physicial 13 x 4 per day = 52. This is not mentioned as an option in the current case. Also, clean up the 89 vs 90 bed hospital issue. Revise everything to a 90 bed scenario.
Chapter 11, problem 3, the "Production Hours Available" should be 20000, not 16000.
Chapter 12, problem 9. Remove the quantity discount information from the solution.
Chapter 12, problem 14. Item number 5, with annual usage of 9600 should
be listed as a Class B item, not class C.
